Well, I'm turning 30 next year and I have a really close relationship to my parents, especially my Dad, and I talk to him often and discuss stuff with him and ask for advice etc. Still, what I appreciate most is that he always encouraged me make my own decisions, even if they differed from his. I suppose it's one of the few things that define me so much that I simply don't get it when it's done differently in other families *shrugs*
I have my problems with Sam and his whiny self as well but I never really thought that him leaving Dean and John was just about him wanting a "normal life". It was about him making his own decisions and not simply following John's orders. Granted, he was being a dick about it, leaving them just like that, but still.
I get what you say about the first season, the only way John's actions make any sense to me, is to interpret them as a deliberate act to get Dean and Sam back together and by that not only re-inforcing their bond but forcing Dean to grow up, too.
I think, even if I got around liking John in season one more, I'd still think the boys' (Dean's esp.) reaction to him in season 3 fitting and believable. Because of course Dean is scared shitless and has no idea what to do - to blame his father (who did exactly the same in the whole soul selling department, so much for being a role model) not too far fetched in a situation like his.
