Oh, I didn't mean it like that - I hope I didn't offend you! It's hard for me to explain, maybe it has something to do with my Dad being fairly old already, so the thought of losing him some time in the near future is not as unthinkable as it might have been for Dean, hence the being overwhelmed with loss there. I dunno.

I think you're right regarding the writers, that makes very much sense and is quite a common problem in TV series, isn't it? Which is probably why I don't 100% trust anyone who isn't Joss Whedon ;)... - Still, when I had a similar problem with, for example, Xander in the 6th season of Buffy, I found fic to read that helped me understand and explore the character within the canon but also going from there. So far, I haven't found any stories about John, that left me with a sorta "So THAT's what he intended! Aha!" feeling, you know Again, I'd love to share your pov or at least to have a consistend opinion of my own ;). So far, I usually go with head scratching and feeling uneasy...
